Mastering the Pop Shove-it: The Gateway to Flip Tricks

The Pop Shuvit or Backside Pop Shove-it is a fundamental trick where the skateboard rotates 180 degrees horizontally beneath your feet. It is essential for developing board control and balance, and serves as a foundation for more advanced tricks like the Kickflip.

🎯 Ready to make your board spin?

With this step-by-step guide, you will learn the Pop Shove-it technique and open the door to a new world of tricks.

👟 Foot Positioning

Front Foot

The front foot should be just behind the front bolts, angled with the heel hanging slightly off. It merely gets out of the way to allow the board to spin and waits to land.

Back Foot

The back foot should be in the tail's toe-side pocket, with toes slightly over the edge. Use your ankle to flick the tail slightly down and towards your back, scooping the board around to spin it.

1

Jump and Scoop

Begin with a slight bend in your knees. As you jump, the back foot pops and scoops the tail in a backward motion, causing the board to spin 180 degrees. The front foot gets out of the way to allow the spin.

2

Rotation Control

Keep your body aligned and centered over the board as it rotates. Use your arms for stability. The board should spin horizontally beneath your feet.

3

Landing

When the board completes its 180-degree rotation, catch it with both feet over the truck bolts. Land with bent knees to absorb the impact.

💡

Golden Tip!

Practice the "scoop" motion while stationary before trying to jump! Put only your back foot on the tail and make the scooping motion backwards - you should be able to make the board spin 180° without leaving the ground.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️

Board over/under rotates - Adjust the force and angle of the back foot scoop.

⚠️

Board flies away or in front - Keep your center of gravity over the board and jump to where the board will land, not behind it.

⚠️

Board flips vertically - Your front foot might be sliding up instead of just getting out of the way.
