Sliding on Your Griptape

The Darkslide is a unique and difficult trick where the skater flips the board upside down and slides on the griptape along a ledge or rail. It was invented by Rodney Mullen and popularized by Mark Gonzales.

🎯 Enter the Darkness

The Darkslide is a legendary and almost mythical trick. Landing one is a huge accomplishment that sets you apart from the crowd and shows incredible technical skill and creativity.

👟 Foot Positioning

1. Front Foot Position

Your front foot is in a kickflip or half-kickflip position, ready to initiate the flip.


2. Back Foot Position

Your back foot is on the tail, ready to pop.

Approach

Approach the ledge parallel with moderate speed.

Pop and Flip

Pop an ollie and initiate a half-kickflip, so the board turns upside down.

Land and Slide

Catch the board with your feet on the trucks/wheels and land on the ledge, sliding on the griptape.

Flip Out

At the end of the slide, use your feet to flip the board back over and land on the bolts.

Golden Tip!

The key is the half-flip and catching the board with your feet on the trucks. This gives you control during the slide.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Board flipping all the way over: Control the flip to only go halfway.

Not being able to flip out: This is the hardest part. Practice the motion on the ground.

Griptape sticking: A well-waxed ledge is essential.
