Backside Flip

Difficulty Level: IntermediateCenter

The Blind Rotation Flip

The Backside Flip, or Backside 180 Kickflip, combines a backside 180-degree ollie with a kickflip. It is often considered more difficult than the Frontside Flip because the rotation is "blind," meaning you lose sight of your landing for a moment.

🎯 Trust Your Instincts

Landing a Backside Flip is a testament to your board control and commitment. It is a highly respected trick that looks incredibly stylish, especially when done smoothly down gaps or on transition.

👟 Foot Positioning

1. Front Foot Position

Your front foot is in a standard kickflip position, angled with your toes pointing slightly forward.

2. Back Foot Position

Your back foot is on the tail, slightly towards the heel-side edge to help with the backside scoop.

1

Wind Up and Pop

Wind up your shoulders for the backside rotation. Pop the tail and begin to turn your shoulders and hips.

2

Flick and Turn

As you rise, flick your front foot for the kickflip while continuing the backside 180 rotation with your body.

3

Spot and Land

The rotation is blind, so you need to trust your feeling. As you come around, spot your landing, catch the board with your feet, and land switch.

💡

Golden Tip!

The key is to commit to the blind rotation. Keep your head turning with your shoulders and trust that the board will be there under your feet.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️

Board gets away from you (shoots out in front): This is common. Try to keep your weight centered and jump with the board.

⚠️

Not completing the 180 rotation: Really focus on turning your shoulders and hips all the way around.

⚠️

"Chicken foot" (landing with only one foot): This is a commitment issue. Try to force yourself to land with both feet, even if you fall.
