Backside 180 Heelflip

Difficulty Level: IntermediateTail

The Powerful Heel and Turn

The Backside 180 Heelflip combines a backside 180-degree ollie with a heelflip. This trick is considered quite difficult as the body and board are turning in the same direction as the heelflip, which can make it feel awkward to control.

🎯 Embrace the Challenge

Landing a solid Backside 180 Heelflip is a huge accomplishment. It is a powerful and respected trick that shows a high level of technical skill and board control.

👟 Foot Positioning

1. Front Foot Position

Place your front toes right on the front edge of the board, with your foot angled. This allows you to press down and flick off your toes from the concave. Avoid placing your foot too far back, as it can make the board go vertical, which is dangerous.

2. Back Foot Position

Position your back foot with the toe deep in the inner pocket of the tail (heel side). This ensures your weight is pressing down through the center of the tail, giving you a straight and powerful pop.

1. The Approach Angle

Instead of turning towards your direction of rotation, approach with a slight angle in the opposite direction. This gives you more "wind up" and helps you stay centered over the board during the rotation.

2

2. Wind Up, Pop, and Rotate

Bend down and start twisting your shoulders and head in the direction you want to go. As you pop, think about turning only 90 degrees. Your body will naturally complete the 180 rotation if you focus on the first half.

3

3. The Flick

Flick hard and fast straight out to the side. The mental cue of a 90-degree turn helps with this side-flick motion. Remember to flick with your toes, not your heel.

4. Catch and Land

You will typically catch this trick with your back foot. Put a good amount of weight on it as you land to control the board and push through the last bit of rotation, sometimes with a slight powerslide.

💡

Golden Tip!

The two most important keys are your approach and your focus. Angle slightly away from your turning direction to get a better wind-up, and mentally focus on turning only 90 degrees while flicking straight out to the side.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️

Board goes vertical: Your front foot is too far back. Move it further up the board.

⚠️

Board lands behind you: You are not leaning enough over your toe side. Find the sweet spot where you are centered but still have pressure on your front toes.

⚠️

Incomplete rotation: Wind up your shoulders more and lead with your head. Focusing on a 90-degree turn helps your body naturally complete the full 180.

⚠️

Flip is inconsistent: Adjust your front foot position. If the board points down, move your foot back slightly. If it doesn’t flip enough, try shifting your foot more towards the edge.
